Purvis Young was an artist from and of the streets of Overtown. His paintings are celebrated for their raw emotion and social commentary depicting the struggles and spirit of urban life.  Young’s pieces are part of numerous museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, the Rubell Museum and the Perez Museum. Young died in 2010 but his work has such an immediacy that it’s as if he has just walked away after making the final stroke of paint on the surface.

Paintings from the collection of Tamara Hendershot and Gary Feinberg
